| Green Bean wrote: I thought the idea behind a co-op was to let consumers save money by buying at wholesale. They are a non-profit organization. I suspect that Harvest's problem is that they don't do enough volume to get good pricing from their distributors. That would explain why the prices at Whole Foods are better. It's either that or higher costs. |

| Robert La Ferla <[Only registered users can see links. ]> writes: Nope. The idea behind a cooperative is to set up a business as member-owned and -operated. Wholesale has nothing to do with it as such, although in a true cooperative, you could probably buy at close to wholesale. In the case of Harvest Coop, however, members aren't the only ones who shop there. Other people want to shop there but don't want to contribute a member fee or labor. So, in cooperatives where non-members may shop, you give a discount or a credit of some kind to members, and everyone else simply pays what's on the sticker. There's no reason why non-members should get anything like wholesale pricing. -- :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :::::::::::::::::::::::: Mary Malmros [Only registered users can see links. ] Some days you're the windshield, Other days you're the bug. |
