Default Is a restaurant responsible for a vegetarian eating meat when the selection is

described as vegetarian? I was at dinner in the dining hall at school and asked the server about the soup and if it was vegetarian. I was told, "there's no meat, its just potatoes and vegetables...it's really good!"

So I get some and begin to eat it and I find pieces of what looked to be shredded turkey or chicken and I got really mad. I asked to speak to the manager and told her about the situation. She said that she would pass the info along to her supervisor and make sure the workers were more informed.

This isn't the first time something like this happened. A while back I was going to get the fettuccine alfredo option, listed as fettuccine alfredo with the vegetarian symbol on the card, and then noticed it had tiny bits of shrimp.

I'm just frustrated about the situation because of I've been a lacto/ovo vegetarian for over 2 1/2 years and I've heard that you can become ill when eating meat after not consuming it for long periods.

Are they responsible for anything that happens?

They owe you an apology, thats about it. Stuff happens.

A spoonfull of shredded chicken isn't going to kill you, and if you kept on eating enough to make you sick than it's your own fault.

Relax.

I'd say partly, but nothing extreme can ever happen by just eating clean meat after being a vegetarian for a long time.

yes you can report them for incorrect labelling of products or giving wrong advise. this is the only way to make sure restaurants get it right. My mum is a vegetarian and it would make her sick if she eat meat.

As a general rule, you shouldn't eat out at restaurants unless they're vegan or vegetarian... even if you eat at a pizza place.... do you want to order a veggie pizza knowing that the cook was handling pepperoni just a minute before..... ? All my kosher friends do the same....

There is a difference between vegetarian and vegan, as I'm sure you know. If it's really important to you, as it seems to be, I would ask every single time what all of the ingredients are. Just because something is labeled as vegetarian don't always count on it not having fowl or seafood in it. Many people think vegetarian just means it doesn't have red meat in it. You'll want to make sure it's VEGAN.

If a restaurant assures you something is vegan, and you get sick and can prove that it came from some kind of meat in the food, then you may have a case. Talk to a lawyer to be sure. Make sure you have proof.
