| Well, the green beans finally played out. I put up 37 pints in jars plus another two pints in vac bags plus we ate about 20 pints. All of this off a 16 foot row of bush Blue Lake green beans. Cukes are also playing out and we've been giving them away by the grocery bag full to friends, neighbors, and our kids. Eggplant is producing like crazy, I've put up 7 pans of moussaka in vac bags and we'll either eat the product of the plants or give it away as we tire of it. The crowder peas, okra, tomatoes, and sweet bells are still producing and probably will until our first frost in January. The cranberry bean volunteers have given us several good messes for dinner and a little to freeze for later. We're fighting the grackles for the figs, tree is full of CD's swinging in the wind but they still get our figs when it's overcast as it has been for several days now. About a dozen pears left on the tree, another dozen persimmons on the Japanese persimmon but the Ponderosa lemon tree is still loaded. The !@##$% squirrels got the plums and peaches but I've ordered bird netting for most of the fruit trees so maybe next year we will get some to eat and make jelly and jams from. My produce guy down at Kroger's called me this morning that he has a couple of flats of Georgia peaches that are bruised that I can have. Will pick them up later this morning and immediately make jam, and/or, canned peaches for cobblers this winter. Greg is a good guy, if he knows I will take the produce he will call me rather than toss it in the dumpster. As the store managers are friends also I tend to get approval for the produce. It also helps that I show up with a case of goodies made from the stuff and they share it around. <VBG> Life is good. George |

| In article <DXEmg.28590$[Only registered users can see links. ]>, George Shirley <[Only registered users can see links. ]> wrote: When you get some decent weather. "-) I live in perfect weather. I just posted this on my website early this morning: June 23, 2006, 1:15 a.m. The last month at Casa Schaller has been a busy one for us - probably for Rob more than me. The Fab Five organized my messes to enable us to consider the recarpeting project that has been postponed for several years. Let me, in my own defense, say that it's not just my lousy housekeeping that has precluded re-carpeting the upstairs of our home. I am not an interior decorator. I have a couple of dear friends who really love to do it. Not me. My preferences are ordinary and I don't really care about any of it. That said, it was easy to let the project slide because of a lack of interest in shopping for carpeting. And Rob's a worse shopper than I am. We are grateful for the counsel of our neighbor and designer Betty. I stopped at the church I've been attending on the day I was going to look for carpet and His Holiness, the Occasionally Reverend Lillejord said I shouldn't do anything until I talked to his guy. "You've got a guy?" I asked. "I've got a guy." All righty, then. I figured I'd better talk to him or I'd have to explain to Guy Pastor why I didn't. Long story shortened: Guy Pastor's guy carpeted our house on Monday of this week. For about $1K less than the carpet store wanted, and on my schedule besides. Because of all this hoopla about picking carpeting and then figuring out where we were going to put furnishings when The Day came, I have mostly postponed my jamming activities. Until tonight, that is. Thursday is Farmers Market day at one of the local churches and I bought a couple quarts of strawberries from an elderly Hmong woman last week - kind of checking things out for myself in anticipation of getting some jam made. Her berries last week were divine. They are organically grown and were sweet as honey. I bought four quarts and late tonight (last night, if you want to be correct, I guess) I made a couple batches of jam. The first was Strawberry Mango and Orange. It's okay, but something's missing in it. And I've just finished a batch of plain Strawberry Jam. It's beautiful and of a nice consistency. And there's no floating fruit, dreaded by jam makers throughout the world! Hurrah! I know a little girl who loves my strawberry jam and I confess to wishing she were here to be a part of the process. It just didn't work out for us to do this when she was visiting for the last couple days. :-( The weather is beautiful and cool and I was entertained by Dave and Craig while I worked. I had my pearls and my heels on. "-) My friend George often ends his newsgroup reports with "Life is good." He's right. Life is good. WeBeJammin'!
