got quite a surprize recently when biting into a slice of fresh crock pot
juneberry coffe cake. I had confused unlabled plastic tubs of juneberries
with a rogue tub of rowanberries. I had read rowanberries are edible after
a first frost so last year had put some rowanberries in the freezer to try
and then forgot about them. both berries are the same size and colour,
although the berries did look a bit different when this last cake was
made. There was a time when it would have rang a warning bell but my brain
has become mush with the passage of time and I'm just not sharp any more.
I can't say I like the tase of rowanberries. It could become an acquired
taste, I suppose, like some of those strong-tasting marmelades which
people must have initially tolerated as medicine to prevent scurvy or
something, as they did with cod liver oil. Funny what people will become
accustomed to eating, and actually claim to prefer. I'll eat the rest of
the cakes and see if I like eating rowanberries by the time they're gone.
Two small cakes are made in the crock pot at the same time, stacked on top
of one another, cooled, sliced, and frozen in the freezer for consumption
over a couple of weeks or more.
