Can I decorate with royal or buttercream icing over top of a fondant covered cake?

| I'm making a book cake and I'm covering the cake with fondant. I wanted to use a royal icing to decorate on top of the cake because it would be easier then cutting out each shape, but will it soak into the fondant and ruin it or somthing, or will it work? Thanks |
