What is a good, simple BBQ sauce recipe that I can use to make my own unique sauce ?

I have tried a lot of different BBQ sauces. Some were great, some not so much. I would like to use a good base sauce, and add my own stuff to it, to make something to fit my own tastes. I would like a sauce that isn't too hard to make, and can be a basis for my own flavor. Any recipes you know of?

BBQ SAUCE

2 tbsp. butter
1 c. water
1 c. ketchup
2 tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. salt (optional)
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/4 c. onion, finely chopped
2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp. lemon juice
2 tbsp. brown sugar
1 tsp. dry mustard powder

Melt butter. Saute onion until soft. Add remaining 9 ingredients. Simmer for 20 minutes. Makes
