Default just back from Austin

My partner Karen and I had a few days in Austin, Texas this week. I had taken
a list from this NG of BBQ places along. Didn't get to hit them all, but I
was able to form some impressions:

Austin:
We went to a place called "Iron Works" on Cesar Chavez and Red River. I
ordered half a rack of baby back ribs, beans, and something else. What
showed up was 5 ribs which looked wonderful but proved to have very
little flavor somehow. I was disappointed, maybe 4 of 10.

I also tried the original Threadgills on N. Lamar and was amazed that
someone on this NG had recommended it as a BBQ place - it isn't! I had
some OK chicken fried steak there, though.

Lockhart:
we got there on a Sunday, Kreuz Market was closed (it's pronounced "kruts",
rhyming with "nuts" by the locals) and I was disappointed. Place is *huge*.
I stopped by Black's (the sign says "OPEN 8 DAYS A WEEK") and it looked
great. I got a sausage sandwich to go, fabulous. 10 out of 10.

Driftwood:
we hit the Salt Lick hungry as hell. I ordered the combo all-you-can-eat
platter, sauce on the side, with pickles & onions. The sausage was OK,
maybe 7 of 10. The ribs were pork spareribs, not baby backs, and were
also just OK, maybe 7 of 10. The brisket, however, was killer. Suc U Lent.
Their BBQ sauce was also wonderful. Brisket & sauce 10 of 10. Pretty good
ambiance. Their coleslaw was killer, 10. I didn't like their potato salad
and found their beans tasteless.

That's it on the report. Karen's crew got taken to Stubbs after I left, on
Red River up at 8th downtown Austin. She had the fried green tomato pie,
said it was killer.

Doesn't matter to me anymore that Verizon dumped newsgroups - I switched to
free.teranews.com which works although it makes you log in a lot.

I've been hearing bad things about teranews reliability. On the other
hand, I've heard good things about motzarella.org. I have no personal
experience with either.

If you want some access to binaries, like ABF, a block account is a
cost-effective solution.

Some people have had luck getting Comcast to reduce their monthly fee
for the loss of usenet. I haven't heard of anyone trying with Verizon.

You're supposed to order beef (ribs and brisket) at Iron Works. You
go to Artz for pork.

A bunch of us here have met at Iron Works a few times.

Not me. I would have spoken up had I seen somebody here give out
that advice.

Experimenting when traveling is risky. I play it safe and get good ribs at
Applebee's. Consistent and good ribs every time.

OK, that *has* to be tongue-in-cheek! I went all the way to Texas with Karen
just to eat some "real" BBQ and here you're telling me to go to Applebee's!
What a hoot!

Glad you made it to Lockhart, but Black's (IMHO) is third out of the 3 BBQ
places there. Smitty's is the favorite of the locals I know, with Kreuz and
Lockhart BBQ close behind. I've been to all 3, and Smitty's is by far my
favorite....
And as far as Applebee's and
Chili's.........................eeeewwwwwwww!

A pal over in alt.callahans had this to say about one provider:
"I'm going to vote for Astraweb. If you don't do any binaries, then
the $10.95 that they charge for their basic package is a STEAL.
Headers aren't counte din the download limit, and you get 25 GB for
that $10.95. There's no time limit on it - it lasts until you use it
up.

"I signed up a couple of months ago. I D/L binaries, and I still have
well over 15 GB left to go..."

Me, I still like Newsguy--used them for years now, and they have a lot
of good features--including a 'Basic' level at 10Gb/mo that costs
$39.95 a year. This is by far the best deal I know of for a
premium-type news provider.

Ed, someone's gonna come in here, see that you've been around this ng

About a month ago we had lunch at Chilis. I was tempted to order ribs, but
then came to my senses.
